Jim Furyk back as Ryder Cup captain in 2027. Can USA win in Europe?
The PGA of America has decided to tap Jim Furyk as United States Ryder Cup team captain again in hopes of turning around its fortunes when golf's biggest international match play event tees off from Ireland in 2027.
Furyk, 55, is expected to be named the U.S. Ryder Cup team for a second time, Golfweek confirmed on Friday, April 24. He previously served in the role in 2018 when the United States lost to Europe at Le Golf National outside Paris. Keegan Bradley was the team captain last fall when the U.S lost to Europe at Bethpage Black in New York.
Furyk, a 17-time PGA Tour winner with a major win at the 2003 U.S. Open, represented the U.S. in nine consecutive Ryder Cups (1997–2014) as a player. He was appointed as a vice captain for the 2016, 2021, 2023 and 2025 Ryder Cup matches. Furyk was also the captain of the United States team that won the 2024 Presidents Cup in Montreal.

BRYSON DECHAMBEAU: Gives LIV Golf vote of confidence despite rumors of demise
When asked for comment on Furyk's selection as 2027 U.S. Ryder Cup captain, the PGA of America told Golfweek: "We will share details regarding the Ryder Cup captain announcement as soon as we can.”
The United States is looking for its first Ryder Cup win since 2021, and its first on European soil since 1993. Davis Love III previously captained the U.S. Ryder Cup team twice, losing in 2012 at Medinah before returning in 2016 at Hazeltine for a 17-11 U.S. win.
Luke Donald will be the European team captain again for the 2027 Ryder Cup at Ireland's Adare Manor after leading Europe to a 15-13 win over the U.S. in September 2025.
Woods was considered the front-runner to be the U.S. team captain at the 2027 Ryder Cup after citing his work with the PGA Tour policy board when he bowed out of the running in 2025. But his March 27 arrest on suspicion of driving while impaired forced Woods to turn down the opportunity again.
The PGA of America announced on April 1 that Woods told the organization he had passed on the chance to captain the 2027 U.S. Ryder Cup team. Woods has pleaded not guilty and said he is “stepping away” to “seek treatment and focus on my health.”
"We commend Tiger for prioritizing his long-term health and deeply respect the courage it takes to make such a personal decision," the PGA of America said in a statement. "Tiger has shared with us that he will not serve as Captain of the 2027 Ryder Cup Team and we support his decision. The PGA of America will share further updates regarding the Ryder Cup Captaincy when appropriate."
The United States lost the 2018 Ryder Cup outside Paris, 17.5-10.5, with Furyk as its captain. It's the most lopsided European win in a 20-year-span, although Furyk also worked in vice captain roles for U.S. teams that won in 2016 and 2021. He then won the 2024 Presidents Cup, 18.5-11.5, two years ago.
“I think I was a lot more prepared this year than I was in '18," Furyk told Golfweek after winning the Presidents Cup. "I think the experience in '18 and knowing that I could have done a few things better, I think, really helped."
Furyk has a career record of 10-20-4 in Ryder Cup matches as a player, according to data-golf.com.
