BOSTON — Joe Mazzulla has never been known for his playoff adjustments but he was forced into making at least one Saturday night. Jayson Tatum was a late scratch due to left knee stiffness about two hours before tip, taking Boston’s biggest star out of the starting five.
The Celtics had played 66 regular-season games without Tatum this year so while losing Boston’s best player was a massive loss, the team was certainly well equipped to proceed without him. Mazzulla had done so in the regular season with great success with a versatile lineup. Boston’s starting five all series had been bad (-9.4 net rating) so a change was overdue regardless.
The options seemed simple. The Celtics had been at their best with Payton Pritchard on the floor all series long so he was a logical candidate to slide in. Elsewhere, Baylor Scheierman had outplayed Sam Hauser in stretches. Maybe Jordan Walsh would get a chance for his defense in that spot too. Mazzulla refused to reveal his changes in his pregame press conference per usual but it would be telling what direction he went in.
However, no one was quite ready for the extremes that Mazzulla went to after six games of limited personnel adjustments. Mazzulla opted for a triple-switch, going with a veteran’s minimum signing (Luka Garza), a two-way forward for most of the season (Ron Harper Jr.) and Scheierman alongside Derrick White and Jaylen Brown.

Mazzulla made a surprising triple-switch, starting Luka Garza, Ron Harper Jr., and Baylor Scheierman alongside Derrick White and Jaylen Brown.
The Celtics' starting five had a poor net rating of -9.4 throughout the series.
Mazzulla's decision to start lesser-known players instead of more effective options was seen as a gamble that ultimately backfired in a crucial playoff game.

The grouping had not played a minute together all season long and looked like it as the team dug itself an 11-3 hole out of the gate. The offense was a mess and the defense was surrendering easy looks before Mazzulla mercifully pulled the plug on the experiment four minutes into the game.
“I thought it was a couple things we saw tactically we wanted to test out,” Mazzulla said. “Obviously, give the series a little bit of a different feel and take advantage of the roster that we had, and take advantage of the guys that can impact plays and whatnot. So that was great by the guys, and we came up short.”
Some of the changes were defensible. Scheierman had been an effective starter for much of the season before Hauser reclaimed his spot late. The other moves were baffling and put guys in an unfair position. Harper Jr. hadn’t played meaningful minutes all series outside of the fourth quarter of Game 6. Garza is a huge defensive liability against Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid. Boston had five shooters on the floor with the lineup but it didn’t matter with all of them misfiring. The trio combined for zero points on 0-of-7 shooting.
Queta had a few rough games against the Sixers with foul trouble but he had started every game this season while healthy. Sitting him for Garza with the team’s season on the line was stunning to put it kindly. Given how well Queta played (17 points, 12 rebounds) it looks even worse.
Ultimately, the Celtics still gave themselves a chance to win Game 7 before closing the game out with 10 straight misses in a nine-point loss. Were tired legs to blame for the cold streak after playing from behind all night? It’s fair to wonder what might have been if Mazzulla started the game with a more proven alternative starting group rather than a bizarre experiment with Boston’s season on the line.
