The Minnesota Twins lost 2-1 to the Cincinnati Reds, but Joe Ryan pitched well, allowing one earned run over six innings with six strikeouts. His ERA now stands at 3.29, despite the loss.
The Minnesota Twins lost 2-1 to the Cincinnati Reds on Friday, but not because of starting pitcher Joe Ryan. The right-hander allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with six strikeouts against no walks over six innings, bringing his ERA to 3.29.
Ryan allowed just one baserunner over the first three frames before running into trouble in the fourth. The 29-year-old struck out Reds second baseman Matt McLain before allowing a double to shortstop Elly De La Cruz. Then, first baseman Sal Stewart reached on a throwing error by Twins third baseman Ryan Kriedler, allowing De La Cruz to advance to third.
Cincinnati third baseman Eugenio Suarez then deposited a two-run double to center, which ended up being the winning hit. Ryan retired the remaining eight hitters he faced, but his offense mustered just one run in support.
If Kriedler hadn't made an error, then Ryan would've just given up one run on the Suarez double, and he wouldn't have earned the loss. However, the 2025 All-Star is now 2-2 this season.

Ryan's productivity is nothing new, as he went 13-10 with a 3.42 ERA over 31 outings (30 starts) in 2025 and 7-7 with a 3.60 ERA across 23 starts in 2024. The 2018 seventh-round draft pick looks every bit like the All-Star player he was last year.

If Minnesota wants Ryan to keep leading its rotation, it will have to address his contract situation. The California native has a $13 million mutual option for 2027, and he could opt out and test the market if he maintains his current momentum. The best starting pitchers in baseball have nine-figure deals, so he wouldn't need to settle for that option salary.
Whether or not the Twins want to pay Ryan top dollar is another issue. The highest average annual values (AAVs) for starting pitchers right now belong to Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler ($42 million), Detroit Tigers southpaw Framber Valdez ($38.3 million), and Texas Rangers right-hander Jacob deGrom ($37 million). If Minnesota isn't serious about contending over the next few years, then it may not want to invest on that level. In that case, it would be in the club's best interest to trade Ryan for assets before he possibly walks in free agency for nothing in return.
Up next for the Twins are two more home games against the Reds before hitting the road to play the New York Mets and Tampa Bay Rays.
