New York Giants linebacker Arvell Reese has made a seamless impression just two days into rookie minicamp. Head coach John Harbaugh praised the 6-foot-4, 240-pound defender for showing zero missed assignments through the early practices.
"Very natural looking mover off the ball, which was something we saw on tape. We thought we saw, but now we saw it on the practice field, so we feel better about it, you know," Harbaugh told reporters. "Picks things up really quick. Very serious-minded. Very diligent about the assignments. I don't think he's got one assignment wrong throughout the two days, which is great to see."
Reese credited intense film study and extra coaching from Frank Bush and Matt Pees for his smooth transition.
"Just studying, and credit to Coach Bush, he spent a lot of time with me and Jack (Kelly) pouring the playbook into us, and Coach Pees as well. Just studying and the coaches for sure," he said.
The versatile WILL role in the Giants' defense, which aligns with the multiple positions he played at Ohio State, has allowed him to quickly fit into the scheme.
"It's always fun to me, especially when I think about all those different roles I could play. Right now, we're only two days in. I've only been introduced a little bit to the defense," Reese said. "I'm looking forward to that, though."
Harbaugh highlighted Reese’s athleticism after watching him on the practice field.
"He moves like a smaller guy. He moves his feet. He can flip his hips," Harbaugh said.
The WILL position's built-in flexibility means Reese will line up in multiple spots, giving the Giants creative ways to deploy his size and movement skills early in his pro career.
