Johnson Wagner has admitted that he was delighted to hear one comment made to the media by Justin Thomas following his second round at the PGA Championship.
Thomas is inside the top 10 after the first two days at Aronimink. The two-time winner of the PGA Championship has posted two rounds of 69 to leave himself on two under par, level with the likes of Cameron Young and Scottie Scheffler.
The American is arguably one of the most intriguing players on the PGA Tour. He has a remarkable amount of talent, but the wins have largely dried up in recent years.
Thomas has won once since lifting the Wanamaker Trophy for a second time back in 2022. He has also registered just one top 10 in the majors since the start of the 2023 season.
After missing much of the first part of the season with injury, his results have been mixed upon his return. He was tied for 77th as he defended his RBC Heritage title last month.

But Thomas appears to have found something in his game in Philadelphia this week. Speaking to CBS Sports after his round, he was asked whether he would have believed what the scores would look like on Monday.
“Definitely not. But at the same time, I don’t think anybody thought it was going to be like this, be this cold and this windy,” he said.
“This wind yesterday and today, it honestly reminds me a little of like Southern Hills, I mean, the wind that we had the first two days there. I can’t remember even Open Championships of that consistent, like strong, brutal wind for two days. And yeah, when you get greens this fast and this severe and pins like this, it’s really, really, really hard and it’s hard to make birdies.”
Justin Thomas made comments to the media that delighted Johnson Wagner, though the specific content of those comments was not detailed.

Of course, Southern Hills held plenty of happy memories for Thomas. It was the site of the 2022 PGA Championship, the second of his two major wins.
Thomas ended up edging out Will Zalatoris in a playoff. And Johnson Wagner admitted that he was delighted to hear Thomas evoke memories of one of the greatest triumphs of his career to date ahead of the weekend at Aronimink.
“I think the psychologist would be very happy with that comment from JT right there,” he said. “And I think these guys, I think everybody in the field is going to be met with a golf course that’s more playable this weekend, simply for the fact that the temperature’s going to go up, the ball’s going to be going a lot further, and it’s going to make a huge difference.
“So I think we’re going to see somebody make a run and I think we possibly see a couple 65s, if not lower.”
You would be forgiven for doubting whether Thomas has the ability to step his game up and, crucially, limit the number of mistakes he makes.
The leaderboard is so congested right now. And Thomas has had a tendency to falter in recent years when he has a real opportunity to take charge of a tournament.
You would have to go back to last year’s Tour Championship for the last time Thomas posted four rounds in the 60s in a single tournament.
He will surely need to do exactly that if he is going to win a third major this week.
