DORAL, Fla. – Ten years ago, when the PGA Tour last held a tournament at Trump National Doral, Jordan Spieth was ranked No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
Ten years later, Spieth drew headlines for moving back into the top 50 for the first time in more than a year, which is telling of where his game has been the last few years. Entering this week, it’s been 329 days since Spieth has recorded a top-10 finish (T-7 2025 Memorial), a span of 15 starts that is tied for his second-longest stretch in his career.
But on Thursday at Donald’s Place, Spieth was a world-beater again. Perhaps it was the return to the Blue Monster that provided Spieth a hot-tub time machine moment as he made seven birdies and an eagle to shoot 7-under 65, his lowest round of the season and lowest opening-round to par on the PGA Tour since 2023. [He shot 65 in the first round of the 2025 Wyndham Championship, too, on what is a par-70 layout.]
“It’s almost there,” Spieth said of the state of his game. “I’m inching closer every week.”

Under blue skies and just the lightest of wind until late in his round, Spieth birdied three of the first five holes. When he chipped in with a lob wedge from 52 feet at the par-5 eighth for eagle and also holed a putt from the fringe from just over 20 feet for birdie at No. 11, Spieth soared to the top of the leaderboard at 7 under through 11 holes despite technically holing only 21 feet, 7 inches of putts to that point – and proof that numbers can be deceiving.
The Jordan Spieth Experience has given his fans several roller-coaster rides and when he made a sloppy bogey at the par-5 12th, dumping a wedge from 100 yards in a greenside bunker, there was a sense of here we go again. Spieth conceded that he has jumped out to good starts this season on several occasions but hadn’t finished the job. This time, he went to caddie Michael Greller and said, “Let's set a new goal, let's pretend we're starting over just to stay aggressive.”

His performance at Doral indicates that he is improving, as he mentioned he is 'inching closer' to his best form.

Spieth drilled a 4-iron at the 245-yard par-3 13th to 7 feet and stole a birdie. “That’s not a bounce-back birdie,” said PGA Tour XM announcer Mark Zecchino. “That’s a leap-back birdie.”
He stiffed his tee shot to 3 feet at the par-3 15th and played the par-3s in 2 under for the day. He gave one back at 16 otherwise, he would have held a share of the lead with Cameron Young, but he rescued par at 18 after spraying his tee shot into the palm trees to the right for one more Houdini act to cap the day.
Spieth knows it’s just one day and there might not be any more 65s in the quiver as Doral toughens the next few days, but he was happy with the start and three significant equipment changes: he inserted a new Titleist GT2 driver and 3-wood in the bag and put a Titleist Pro V1 Left Dash X ball into play. But for one day at least, it was 2016 all over again and Spieth played with the panache and swagger of a world No. 1, not No. 50.
