Jordan Spieth’s comments prove Scottie Scheffler made a very smart call ahead of the PGA Championship

Jordan Spieth addressed the media at Aronimink on Monday ahead of the start of the PGA Championship later this week.

Spieth heads into the PGA Championship in search of the missing piece of the puzzle on his ultimate quest to complete the career Grand Slam.

The 32-year-old won The Masters and the US Open in 2015, before adding the Open Championship to his résumé two years later.

However, Jordan Spieth has unfortunately regressed as a golfer ever since his win at Royal Birkdale in 2017.

This week at Aronimink will be Spieth’s 10th attempt at completing the career Grand Slam at the PGA Championship.

The man from Dallas, Texas, isn’t heavily fancied to win at Aronimink this week but the complete opposite is true regarding Scottie Scheffler.

And the world number one may now have a big advantage over his rivals.

Spieth will be playing for the third week in a row this week at Aronimink.

As a result, it goes without saying that the three-time major champion may be low on energy this week.

He spoke to reporters on Monday and responded when asked what his Monday-Wednesday plans consist of this week.

“This being a third week in a row — it also changed because it used to be in August. We would come off World Golf Championships in Akron and go straight to the PGA. Akron was a very difficult golf course, but then it was typically very hot, so that changes your days,“ Spieth said.

*“*Now it’s a third in a row, which is also kind of unique. For me, it’s not — it’s more about what just happened the last couple weeks. If you have the week off, you kind of have a little more energy to get here early, get prepared, play more holes.

*“*It’s not the luxury of playing the last two weeks, and I didn’t get up here prior to then, and I don’t think that would have been necessarily super useful or I would have tried to do it.

*“*Right now it’s about getting to know the golf course, where the pin locations are going to be, what I was just talking about with that distance control, like what pins you attack, where are the ones you layoff of, stuff like that. What the deceiving shots are.

“It’s really more methodical now where it used to be hours and hours. It’s not just an age thing. It’s more just like recognizing that major weeks can feel really long, and you want to feel your best when you wake up Sunday morning. Part of it is energy conservation and figuring out how to attack the course. As far as the reps go, if you’re not ready by now after the last couple weeks, you can’t really cram for the test at a major.“

Those comments from Spieth prove that Scheffler made a very wise decision by skipping last week’s event at Quail Hollow.

Missing the Truist Championship must have been an incredibly difficult decision for Scheffler to make.

The 29-year-old world number one reigned supreme at the PGA Championship when it was held at Quail Hollow last year.

However, he will now be reaping the rewards for skipping the Truist.

Scottie Scheffler should be fresh as a daisy this week at Aronimink, while the likes of Spieth, Cam Young, Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick all head into the event on the back of extremely challenging weeks.

The 20-time PGA Tour winner has recorded runner-up finishes in his last three starts.

Now there is a growing feeling that he will go one better this week at the PGA Championship, and secure the fifth major championship of his career in the process.
