Jordan Walsh experienced fluctuating playing time during the Celtics' 2025-26 season, averaging 17.8 minutes per game. With mentorship from Jaylen Brown and Xavier Tillman, he navigated the challenges of being a reserve player while maintaining readiness for key moments.
BOSTON — The Boston Celtics thrived on having a deep, interchangeable bench throughout the 2025-26 season. Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla will throw in guys who haven't played in days in a key moment to see how they handle it or simply because his team needs a different approach. But what's it actually like being one of those moving parts? Celtics wing Jordan Walsh knows, as the 22-year-old had his playing time fluctuate throughout the regular season. He went from a first-time starter in November averaging over 24 minutes per game back to a reserve in February who averaged 14 minutes a night off the bench. Prior to a Saturday morning practice at the Auerbach Center, Walsh admitted that being a member of the "Stay Ready Group" isn't always easy.
Jordan Walsh spoke candidly about the ups and downs of playing time, and how he worked through it with Jaylen Brown & former Celtic Xavier Tillman:

— Daniel Donabedian (@danield1214) April 18, 2026 "It's kind of tough," he said at the podium. "The thing a lot of people don't really know about the NBA, or don't really pay attention to, is navigating those highs and lows. It's so hard, one day, to have your name going crazy and everywhere, and everybody's talking about it and how good you're doing, and the next day, it'd be silent and have nothing, and you're just on the bench." Walsh has still made incredible progress since the Celtics selected him in the second round of the 2023 NBA Draft. He averaged career-highs across the board this season and entered 68 games. In comparison, he only played in 61 regular-season contests combined in his two previous years in the league. Although his playing time was never exactly uniform, Walsh averaged a career-high 17.8 minutes per game in his third year in the green and white. And with the help of Celtics star Jaylen Brown and former Celtics big man Xavier Tillman Sr., Walsh never let the ebb and flow of the season impact his play. "I think it's hard to navigate those times because you've been so high up," Walsh said candidly. "You're used to being there for so long and then coming back down. So for me, I kind of navigated (it) by talking with JB, talking with X(avier), and guys like that and the (coaching) staff." Jaylen Brown on Jordan Walsh's increased confidence:
"It's been great. I don't want to boost his head up too much. I don't want him to start getting cute. He has to still take care of the details. But he's been doing a good job. We're going to need him to maintain that."
Jordan Walsh's playing time fluctuated from over 24 minutes per game as a starter in November to 14 minutes as a reserve in February.
Jaylen Brown served as a mentor to Jordan Walsh, helping him navigate the ups and downs of playing time and emphasizing the importance of maintaining confidence.
Walsh faced the difficulty of inconsistent playing time, having to stay prepared for games despite often being on the bench.
Joe Mazzulla's coaching helped build trust in Walsh, as he was given significant responsibilities, including guarding key opponents like Tyrese Maxey.

— Daniel Donabedian (@danield1214) December 6, 2025 Brown especially has been a mentor for Walsh, as the four-time All-Star is aware of the youngster's value to the Celtics. Walsh's length, athleticism, and grit make him an impressive defender and Boston will likely look to him in the playoffs to counter the speed of point guard Tyrese Maxey, who'll lead the Philadelphia 76ers against the Celtics in the first round. "(I'm) just always trying to stay on course, keep my foundation grounded, so that whenever the time does come, that I do play again, that I'll be ready, which I did through consistency in workouts and lifting and eating right and stuff like that," Walsh said. "So I tried to keep the foundation the same no matter when I was playing or when I wasn't playing. So that when I am playing or when I do get in the game, I'm ready for the moment." While some might argue that Walsh's inconsistent minutes are due to a potential lack of trust from Mazzulla, that doesn't seem to be the case at all. Mazzulla no longer expects Walsh to participate in pregame scrimmages — which are usually meant for players who won't get off the bench much — and gave him the task of guarding Maxey in the very first game of the regular season. "It was cool to have that opportunity," Walsh said. "To have that level of trust was the biggest thing, from Joe, from the staff, and everybody putting in extra hours and extra time to walk me through their plays and how he is effective." Jordan Walsh told a story of how Joe Mazzulla said he was “dead in the water, but now you’re back alive” early in the season.
Walsh had to ask around what it meant and said he’s “revived” himself:

— Daniel Donabedian (@danield1214) April 18, 2026 So, even though Walsh probably won't start in the postseason or average 30 minutes a game, it's not personal. He's earned the respect of Mazzulla and everybody with the Green Team knows that when his name is called, no matter the time of game or the score, he'll be ready to go. "It's huge, again, to have the level of trust," Walsh emphasized. "But it was really thanks to the staff that I was prepared for that (first) game and even going into this series that I'll be prepared for another moment like that."
