Jose Mourinho in line for sensational Real Madrid return

Jose Mourinho is reportedly the favourite to land the Real Madrid job and make an unexpected return to the Bernabeu at the end of the season.

Los Blancos are currently searching for their next manager as Alvaro Arbeloa is expected to vacate the role in the summer.

The former Liverpool right-back replaced Xabi Alonso in the dugout after he was sacked in January.

According to The Athletic, Mourinho is Real Madrid president Florentino Perez’s “favoured candidate” to lead the team as head coach next season.

Perez is driving the search for their next manager and is the “main supporter” of bringing back the Portuguese tactician, but “some other voices” within the club are against appointing the former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham boss.

Mourinho previously managed Real between 2010 and 2013, winning the La Liga title over Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona with a record points total in 2012.

The 63-year-old is currently managing Benfica, with whom he signed a two-year contract in September last year. His side completed a shock 4-2 victory over Real in the UEFA Champions League league phase in January to reach the knockout stage of the competition.
