Journalist: Liverpool must be ‘ruthless’ and sell fan favourite this summer

Gomez has long been valued for versatility, professionalism and experience. He can cover centre back, right back and left back when needed. Yet the central theme of the discussion was simple, availability. For Liverpool, sentiment may no longer be enough.

David Lynch Delivers Clear Verdict

Lynch did not hide his view. “If Liverpool go into next season with Joe Gomez considered a serious option at centre half or right back, then I think it’s been a failing because they can’t rely on him.”

That is a sharp judgement, but it reflects a recurring problem. Gomez’s quality has rarely been questioned. His fitness record has.

Lynch went even further, saying, “He just can’t play. If he plays, he gets injured. You will not get four or five games in a row out of him. It’s just not possible.”

For a club competing across multiple fronts, that uncertainty creates planning issues before a ball is kicked.

Liverpool Need Reliability in Squad Building

Liverpool have often relied on Gomez as a useful solution when injuries strike elsewhere. His adaptability made him valuable during different managerial eras. Under Arne Slot, however, squad construction is under renewed scrutiny.

Lynch argued that Liverpool cannot continue treating Gomez as dependable depth. “You might as well not have him in the squad,” he said, referring purely to how often injuries interrupt his rhythm.

That sounds harsh, yet elite recruitment is usually ruthless. Clubs need players available for three matches in a week, not just one appearance followed by another spell out.
