Kamehameha remains at the top of the baseball poll despite a disrupted season. Pac-Five and Mid-Pacific were involved in a controversial seeding decision after their tiebreaker game was canceled.
Strange season, indeed
The mass cancellation of half the regular season didn’t sit well with ILH baseball fans, but a rainy spring like none other in the past 20 years had something to do with it.
On Sunday, though, the two teams tied in second place — by winning percentage — got an unexpected twist. Pac-Five (5-2) and Mid-Pacific (4-1-2) were told by the league that their tiebreaker game on Monday was off the board. The second seed was doled out to Pac-Five, and Mid-Pacific became the third seed.
Coach Dunn Muramaru said he is still stumped without any explanation from the ILH.
Muramaru, now in his 40th year of coaching high school baseball, points to rule 4.3 in the National Federation of High Schools baseball rule book as the standard for determining seeding. Pac-Five’s win-loss percentage, .714, is equalled by MPI. A tie counts as a half-win by nearly all leagues. Some leagues and states use a 2-1-0 format, two points for a win, one for a tie. Same difference with the two teams equal on paper.
“How did the ILH come up with the decision that Pac-Five and Mid-Pacific have the same record (winning percentage) and Pac-Five is second and Mid-Pacific is third,” he said. “I am a baseball guy and actually read the baseball rule book. Without a rule addressing ties, it should fall to the rule, 4.3. This is not soccer or hockey.”
Efforts to reach the league were unsuccessful.
By canceling the game, the ILH manages to avoid putting the loser of a tiebreaker game into the first day of the round-two, double-elimination tournament at a significant disadvantage. The tourney begins today, which means MPI or Pac-Five would have played on back-to-back days, as well as on Wednesday.
Mid-Pacific plays sixth seed ‘Iolani today at 3:30 p.m. Pac-Five now has a bye until Wednesday, when it plays the MPI/‘Iolani winner.
Today’s losers meet on Wednesday in an elimination game. In other words, any team, including Pac-Five and Mid-Pacific, could see its season over in a matter of days. All of this is an avalanche over a schedule that already lost six to seven games out of the normal 14 in league play for each squad.
All of it means little to the litany of elite teams that survive the ILH gauntlet every season.
Kamehameha has already secured one of the two automatic state-tourney berths.
Nabbing the 2 seed gives Pac-Five a valuable spot on the totem pole. If the Wolfpack don’t reach the tournament final and Kamehameha wins the round-two tourney, Pac-Five will meet the tourney runner-up for a state berth.
All five ILH Division I teams have been ranked in the Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10. Two, or maybe three, will be stranded at home come state-tournament week.
Meanwhile, Kamehameha remains at No. 1 in the Baseball Top 10 after collecting seven of eight first-place votes from coaches and media. The Warriors clinched first place and the top seed in the ILH tournament after blanking Maryknoll 7-0 on Friday. They are riding a 10-game win streak and have not lost since Feb. 28.
Mighty Mililani
The onslaught shows no sign of ending at Mililani. The Lady Trojans gathered all eight first-place votes to remain at No. 1 in the Softball Top 10 for a 10th consecutive week.
In 10 OIA games, Coach Rose Antonio’s squad has scored 134 runs.
The last time Mililani did not score double-digits in a game was against Campbell on March 27 at Tiger Softball Stadium — a night game that was televised statewide.

The cancellation was primarily due to an unusually rainy spring, the likes of which had not been seen in the past 20 years.
Pac-Five was awarded the second seed based on their win-loss percentage of .714, despite both teams having equal records.
Coach Dunn Muramaru expressed confusion over the seeding decision, stating he received no explanation from the ILH regarding the cancellation of the tiebreaker game.
Rule 4.3 outlines the standard for determining seeding based on win-loss percentages, where a tie counts as a half-win.
