Kansas City Royals Receive Good News Despite Loss to Tigers
The Kansas City Royals were defeated by the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday, losing by a final score of 2-1. Kansas City was unable to get any offensive rhythm going. The ball club ended up with only six hits and the aforementioned one run. The good news is that Seth Lugo turned in an extremely strong performance on the mound.
Lugo, 36, has pitched well throughout the 2026 campaign. On Wednesday, the right-handed hurler went 6.2 innings and surrendered only one earned run. He struck out seven hitters as well.
Overall, Lugo has now pitched to a stellar 1.48 ERA in his four starts in 2026. He has struck out 21 hitters in his 24.1 innings on the mound as well.
Lugo endured an up and down 2025 season. He recorded a 4.15 ERA across 26 outings. It seemed as if the 36-year-old was potentially declining after his strong 2024 campaign that saw him turn in a 3.00 ERA in 33 starts.
At the moment, Lugo looks like the pitcher from 2024. Will he end up finishing second in American League Cy Young voting and earning an All-Star selection again? Anything is possible, but the Royals would be content if he is at least consistent this year.
So far, so good for Seth Lugo.
Lugo pitched great against the Tigers, but the Royals still lost the game on Wednesday in Detroit. Kyle Isbel had the Royals' only RBI on Wednesday. Jac Caglianone had three hits as well, but the rest of the lineup was unable to get things going.
Jack Flaherty started for the Tigers. He allowed only one run in six innings while striking out seven. It was a pitcher's duel between Flaherty and Lugo to say the least.
Detroit's bullpen held Kansas City scoreless following Flaherty's departure, while Kansas City gave up another run. That ended up being the difference in the contest.
The Royals fell to 7-11 with the defeat while the Tigers improved to 9-9.
Detroit will host Kansas City once again on Thursday afternoon. The Tigers have defeated the Royals by exact scores of 2-1 in each of the first two games of the series. Offense has been a struggle for both teams so far. Kansas City will try to score some more runs and earn a victory on Thursday.
First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 PM EST in Detroit.
The final score was 2-1 in favor of the Detroit Tigers.
Seth Lugo pitched 6.2 innings, giving up only one earned run and striking out seven batters.
