FOXBOROUGH - For the second time this week, on Day 1 of the NFL draft no less, Mike Vrabel stood in front of the assembled media, and attempted to put out what initially started as a brush fire, and has now turned into a raging inferno.
Itâs a battle that keeps getting worse, and one he continues to lose.
After an initial New York Post story showed photos of him and former Athletic NFL insider Dianna Russini canoodling at an adults-only resort in Arizona, and a second Page Six story placing Vrabel and Russini together at a bar in New York, six years earlier, doing much of the same, the Patriots coach has had to answer for his actions.
Heâs had to have uncomfortable conversations with his wife and family, the organization, the players, and the fans.
When it comes to the Patriots specifically, the compilation of stories - with TMZ also jumping into the fray with more photos of Vrabel and Russini - has created a major distraction at an important time for the football team.
And it appears this isnât going to end any time soon.
As it is, Vrabel will be away from the team on Day 3 of the NFL Draft to be with his family, as he works to, in his words, give them as well as the football team âthe best version of me possible.â
He admitted his actions âdonât meet the standard that I hold myself to.â He didnât acknowledge much more.
While Vrabelâs initial press conference seemed to help his cause a bit, this one didnât do the trick from a big picture standpoint.
He didnât do much to stop the bleeding, or stifle the noise thatâs been generated across the country.
Although, season ticket holders at the teamâs annual draft party didnât seem ready to bail on their coach.
Vrabel made a stop to chat with the fans prior to his session with the media.
While there, he did not address the elephant in the room, but did discuss the expectations of his football team.

âWhen we got here a year ago, we wanted to have a product you guys would be proud of,â Vrabel began. âYouâre used to winners. Robert and Jonathan (Kraft), they put winners on the field, and thatâs what you guys are used to and thatâs what weâve talked about bringing back.â
Bringing back a product fans will be proud of is going to be a tall order. And that would be the case with or without any scandal.
At this point, between Vrabelâs availability, or lack of such dealing with the mess, having a much tougher schedule in 2026, and having a team thatâs still lacking in elite talent and game-changing players, the mission has grown infinitely harder.
As it is, Vrabel, the reigning NFL Coach of the Year, was uncertain when he would be back, or how much time heâd be away from the football team as a result of the Russini mess.
âI canât answer that,â Vrabel said when asked how long he might need to be away. âI can only say that whatever my family needs, thatâs what Iâm going to provide.
âBut I also understand whatâs needed from me here. This is an exciting time. We just finished our first week (of offseason workouts). Guys are excited. I see leaders developing the new players that we brought on to the team, and Iâm confident that if I werenât able to be here, that we have people in place that can support them and do those things.â
That sounds good in theory. It should be an exciting time with new players and new draft picks coming aboard. And Vrabelâs staff is top-notch.
But given his status, given what itâs going to take to get his house in order so to speak, the impact of his time away remains to be seen.
And, given whatâs transpired, given the steps Vrabel needs to take to give everyone âthe best version of me possibleâ itâs easy to question if heâll still have the same all-in buy-in from the players as a result.
Will he still command the room with his larger-than-life personality, which has dimmed considerably in recent days?
Will he elicit the same kind of faith and trust from his players?
Along with his family, Vrabel has now had to address his players, his coaching staff, and the Krafts more than once dealing with this difficult subject.
Is there more to come? Has Page Six finally lobbed itâs last grenade?
Time will tell.
The organization came out in support of him Thursday. And season ticket holders certainly seemed to have continued allegiance to Vrabel in wake of all the allegations and innuendo created from the tabloid photos.
Many offered words of encouragement when he spoke to them Thursday night.
One season ticket holder yelled: âWe love you, Mike.â
Another screamed: âWe support you.â
But the work - the repair from damage already done - is far from over.
