The Patriots hold the 31st overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft. Speculation surrounds their potential choices and strategies for this crucial selection.

With the 31st overall pick, the Patriots will be on the clock tonight.
What will they do?
What should they do?
During the NFL Combine in February, Patriots coach Mike Vrabel wasnât giving away any secrets when asked about the teamâs first round pick.
âBest player available hopefully,â he said. âMaybe we trade up. Maybe we trade out. I donât know.â
Me? I just know what the priority should be, especially in the first round, and beyond.
Whether itâs grabbing a game-changing weapon, be it at receiver or tight end, or fortifying the offensive line, that has to be the primary objective in the early rounds.
Yes, there is a glaring need for at least one edge rusher. And the first round would be a good place to land a stud pass rusher. But the defensive end class is stacked. The Patriots can still land an impact rusher in the second round, perhaps moving up the board to get the desired player.
They can also add important depth pieces at linebacker, safety and cornerback later in the draft. Re-tooling the defense is certainly a critical component for the Patriots in this draft. But first things first.
The 31st overall pick is crucial for the Patriots as it represents an opportunity to strengthen their roster with a talented player.
The current coach of the New England Patriots is Mike Vrabel.
The Patriots may consider drafting a player that fills a key position of need or trading the pick for additional assets.
The NFL draft is scheduled to take place tonight, with the Patriots set to make their selection at the 31st overall pick.

Helping Maye means one of two first-round scenarios.
Either the Patriots make a splash with an offensive tackle, who will serve as insurance behind Morgan Moses and Will Campbell, and make a push to start on either side, or go after a legitimate weapon.
Now some qualifiers.
If A.J. Brown is truly in the cards, then tackle should be the choice at No. 31. Or, perhaps move up the board for Oregon star tight end Kenyon Sadiq, who will add sizzle to the Patriots offense beyond Brown.
Game changers come in different positions. And Sadiq is a difference maker at tight end.
But letâs start with tackle.
While Eliot Wolf claimed the Patriots donât have to draft for need, this is an absolute must, especially with Moses being 35 and no sign of a legitimate tackle behind either Moses or Campbell.
The best options at 31?
Arizona Stateâs Max Iheanchor and or Clemsonâs Blake Miller. Both should be right around their range. The top seven tackles - with Iheanachor and Miller being in that mix - are likely to come off in the first round. So if the Patriots wait a round, theyâll miss out. They might even have to move up a few spots to insure landing one of them.
Itâs a boring pick, but itâs needed. Just as the Patriots needed to draft a left tackle with the fourth overall pick last year.
They also need to grab a pass-catching tight end early. So if they donât boldly move up for Sadiq, they should pounce in the second or third round the latest.
Ohio Stateâs Max Klare, Vanderbiltâs Eli Stowers, Georgiaâs Oscar Delp and Stanfordâs Sam Roush are good options in the second and third rounds. As pass catchers, they would serve as great chess pieces for offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to work with.
Ultimately, this all comes back to setting Maye up for greater success.
Itâs about protecting Maye, who was sacked a record 21 times in the postseason, and giving him more elite weapons to work with.
If the Brown deal isnât as sure as it seems, receiver jumps to the head of the class.
Obviously, the Patriots havenât had the best history drafting receivers early.
That doesnât mean they should stop trying. So if no Brown, then the names should include Texas A & Mâs KC Concepcion, Indianaâs Omar Cooper Jr., or Washingtonâs Denzel Boston.
Of course a lot will depend on how the board falls, and who falls to them at 31, or if a move is needed to land the desired player with a trade.
âI think we are going to continue to try to strengthen our team,â Vrabel said Tuesday during his surprise media availability. âOur first focus is going to be on Thursday night and making sure we get that right.â
Helping Maye is getting it right.
