Kate Wiesner signs new contract with Washington Spirit

The Washington Spirit announced on Thursday they have signed defender Kate Wiesner to a new three-year contract through 2028 season with a club option for 2029.

“I am beyond excited to continue my time with the Spirit,” said Wiesner. “I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue to wear this jersey with pride as we continue to forge a legacy together. DC, you are my home, and I’m honored to represent the heart of this city, on and off the field.”

Wiesner primarily plays as a left back and has made 40 appearances for the Spirit on the defensive line since joining the team in 2024 via the NWSL college draft.

“Kate (Wiesner) is exactly the type of player and person we want in our organization and we’re thrilled to keep her in DC for at least the next three seasons,” said Spirit General Manager Nathan Minion. “We’ve been able to see Kate develop into a key piece of our back line since drafting her in 2024 and have extreme confidence in her being an integral part of our long-term plan to sustainably compete for championships each year.”

The outside back has also appeared in international competitions across various levels with the United States dating back to 2015 with the United States Under-15 National Team, and appearances in various international tournaments as a youth. Wiesner has also gotten call-ups to the senior team under head coach Emma Hayes, and earned her first cap after substituting on in the final minutes of a match against Italy in November 2025.

The Spirit play their next match at home on Friday, April 24, against the reigning NWSL Shield-winners, Kansas City Current.
