For the second year in a row, the Boston Red Sox got off to a bad start. And for the second year in a row, Craig Breslow wasn't afraid to shake things up.
This April, Boston fired its manager in the middle of a campaign for the first time since 2001, parting ways with Alex Cora and much of the coaching staff in an effort to turn its season around.
Overhauling the coaching staff one month into the season is incredibly jarring, which is why it typically happens during the offseason. Several players, including Trevor Story, have already spoken out about it.
MLB insider Ken Rosenthal understands why.
"It's a disruption to your operation," Rosenthal said on Thursday's episode of "Foul Territory." "I can't remember a team firing its manager and that many coaches this early in the season. I don't know that that's happened."
Rosenthal thinks the timing of the layoffs was poor and unusual. If the Red Sox had done them over the winter, they would have had more time to interview other candidates and conduct a more thorough search process. Instead, they had to rely on internal replacements from the minor leagues, most of whom don't have any MLB experience.
"If you fire a manager this early, you probably shouldn't have brought him back in the first place," Rosenthal added. "It's an overreaction in many ways... You gotta show more feel, and I don't see the Red Sox doing that."
Time will tell if the shake-up pays off for Boston. The results have been mixed so far with a 2-2 record and a minus-three run differential since the firings, but there's still plenty of time for the new coaching staff to try to right the ship.
