The San Antonio Spurs suffered a surprising 104-102 defeat in Game 1 on Monday. The result immediately shifted the tone of a series they were expected to control.
Mitch Johnsonās side entered as favourites to reach the conference finals. However, they failed to capitalise despite Anthony Edwards being limited to just 25 minutes.
That outcome has already raised concerns among analysts. Former NBA champion Kendrick Perkins has gone further, warning of a potential sweep if things do not change quickly.

Perkins addressed the situation on ESPNās First Take, making his stance clear ahead of Game 2. He believes the next game could define the entire series.
āIām telling you right now, if the San Antonio Spurs donāt get Game 2 in a must win situation, theyāre gonna get swept.ā
He emphasised his belief in Minnesotaās intent and level. āThis team means business. I know it when I see it.ā
Stephen A. Smith pushed back strongly on that claim. He dismissed the idea entirely and suggested Perkinsā take was exaggerated.
Smith even joked that Perkins needed to be ādrug-tested,ā underlining how unlikely he believes a sweep would be for the Western Conferenceās second seed.
San Antonioās offensive display in Game 1 fell short of expectations. Their scoring output lacked the consistency usually seen during the postseason.
Dylan Harper led the team with 18 points, but that total highlighted a broader issue. No player was able to take full control offensively.
Victor Wembanyama also endured a quiet night, scoring just 11 points, contrasting with his usual influence.
Despite the setback, there is precedent for recovery. The Spurs lost Game 2 to the Trail Blazers in the first round but responded with two away wins.
