Kentucky shows interest in Furman guard Alex Wilkins

Kentucky Basketball has shown interest in Furman guard Alex Wilkins as the Wildcats continue to explore transfer portal options to bolster their backcourt.

Wilkins, a 6-foot-5, 175-pound guard, is coming off an impressive freshman season in which he averaged 17.8 points, 4.7 assists, and 2.0 rebounds per game. He shot an efficient 46% from the field on 13.7 attempts per game while also hitting 32.8% from 3-point range on 5.7 attempts per contest. His scoring ability and offensive versatility have quickly made him one of the more sought-after guards in the portal.

However, one area of concern is ball security. Wilkins averaged 3.8 turnovers per game in 29.8 minutes, a number that will need to improve as he transitions to a higher level of competition. Despite that, his ability to create offense and facilitate for others makes him an option for Kentucky head coach Mark Pope.

Wilkins has drawn widespread interest across the country, telling The Portal Report that programs such as Alabama, UConn, Syracuse, Houston, Xavier, Baylor, Creighton, Providence, Texas, SMU, Miami, Arkansas, Kansas, Ole Miss, Illinois, Seton Hall, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky are all in the mix.

For Kentucky, adding a proven scorer with size in the backcourt could be a priority as the roster continues to take shape. Wilkins’ production as a freshman suggests he could make an immediate impact at the next level.
