Rob Wright III has decided to return to BYU after visiting the Kentucky Wildcats, disappointing Kentucky fans and increasing pressure on Coach Mark Pope. The Wildcats are now expected to shift their focus to other transfer portal targets.
The Kentucky Wildcats brought transfer portal guard Rob Wright III in for a visit on Monday, hoping to lure him to Lexington. Coach Mark Pope continues to look for recruiting wins, and Wright would have certainly been one. He was favored to land with the Cats at one point, but after the visit, momentum shifted back to a BYU return, and on Wednesday, he announced his decision and broke the hearts of Big Blue Nation once again.
Wright announced that he would be returning to BYU, a decision sure to heighten the pressure on Pope, who is struggling to close on top players. Kentucky fans are increasingly growing frustrated with the lack of commitments not just in the transfer portal, but in all forms.
Last year's fiasco has Big Blue Nation divided. Fans want to root for Pope, but the lack of results, both on the court and off, have many ready for the experiment to end. Another disappointing season just might be his last in Lexington.
Kentucky will likely now pivot to Zoom Diallo, who they also targeted early and met with last weekend. They also have some other highly ranked targets, like Donnie Freeman, they are involved with. Pope can still salvage this offseason, but Wright's decision is another recruiting loss, and he can't afford many more of them.
