
Alexier Padilla from Mitchell won both the 200-meter and 400-meter races at the Pierre Legion Relays, clocking times of 22.05 and 51.47 seconds, respectively. Mitchell placed fourth overall in the team standings with 82 points.
Apr. 23—PIERRE — Mitchell's Alexier Padilla powered the Kernels on the track on Thursday at the Pierre Legion Relays, winning the boys 200- and 400-meter races at Hollister Field.
Padilla won the 200-meter race in 22.05 seconds, which was just off the school record of 22.0 seconds, and ranks third in MHS history. The MHS senior also won the 400 in a time of 51.47 seconds. Padilla also ran 10.83 seconds in the 100, which was good for third and ranks as a personal-best time.
Mitchell was fourth in both sets of team standings at the meet, which was moved up a day due to better weather conditions on Thursday. In the boys standings, MHS put up 82 points in a 14-team battle. Brandon Valley won with 158 points, followed by Sioux Falls Washington (132) and Pierre (103) in third. For the girls, Brandon Valley won with 193 points, Pierre was second with 126, Sioux Falls Washington was third with 96 points and Mitchell was fourth with 50.5 points.
Luke LeBrun was third in the boys 300 hurdles (44.24), and Samari Wright was fourth (54.78) in the 400 for Mitchell. Hunter Patton took fifth in the boys 1,600-meter run (4:45.71). Sam Mullenmeister was sixth in the boys 200 (22.93).
In the field events, Bryer Stach finished third in the discus (143-11) and Logan Bessler was (142-6). In the shot put, Stach was fourth (47-0.5) and Ayden Wood had a fifth-place finish (43-8). Ryan Driscoll was sixth in the boys pole vault (10-3), and Mullenmeister was a sixth-place finisher in the long jump (19-8). Gage Schmidt was sixth in the boys javelin (129-5).
Mitchell had a strong day in the girls field events. Audrey Miller was second in the triple jump (35-4) and second in the high jump (5-0). Miller was also fourth in the long jump (16-1.5). Taylor DeJong took second place in the shot put (36-8). Madilyn Janis was fifth in the javelin throw (102-0), Ashley Haring was fifth in the high jump (4-8) and Macey Bessler had a sixth-place finish in the girls pole vault (7-3).
In the girls 100, Abby Hohn finished sixth (12.76) and McKenna Auch was sixth in the 100-meter hurdles (16.33).
In the relays, Mitchell had a second-place finish in the boys sprint medley relay run by Luke LeBrun, Samari Wright, Landon Johnson and Hunter Patton (3:48.34) and third in the 4x800-meter relay with Adam Kampshoff, Johnson, Keniel Padilla and Ben Gerlach (8:45.55).
Lyman was also in action at the Legion Relays. Brooke Montgomery was second in the girls 100 (12.31), an event won by Pierre's Charlee Williams-Smith (11.97). Cole Kieffer was second in the boys 110-meter hurdles (15.80), and Chloe Collins was third in the girls 300 hurdles (52.19) for the Raiders.
Mitchell will have a contingent of track athletes in action at the Greenway Relays on Friday in Mount Vernon. After that, Mitchell will host its home finale on Thursday, April 30, in the Mitchell Triangular with Aberdeen Central and Huron.
