Despite Kevin Durant’s regular season ending with a disappointing loss against the Timberwolves, he did achieve another milestone in the process. His 33 point performance pushed him to 2,026 points this year. A poetic finish for the 2026 season.
He’s now scored over 2,000 points in a season eight times throughout his career, most recently scoring 2,032 for Phoenix in 2024, per Basketball-Reference. Due to injuries and pandemic-shortened seasons, that was the first time he’s reached that mark since his final games with the Warriors.
According to StatMuse, this KD tied with Kobe Bryant, Dominique Wilkins, and Alex English for the fifth most 2,000 point seasons in NBA history. He just passed James Harden, Oscar Robertson, and Wilt Chamberlain who each had seven such seasons. Unsurprisingly elite company.
Durant is officially the oldest player on the list too, surpassing that point total at age 37. You might expect that record to be held by LeBron James, but he hasn’t done it since before he joined the Lakers, way back at age 33 in 2018. Basketball-Reference shows Karl Malone being the previous record holder in his 15th season at the turn of the century. He was 36 years old at the time.

Virtually every player to score 2,000 points in a season is already in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, with a large chunk of the remaining players likely getting in.
The only active players who aren’t already certain locks are Jalen Brunson, Trae Young, and Bradley Beal. I’d say DeMar Derozan, Paul George, KAT, and Joel Embiid all have a chance to make the HOF, though some are more likely than others.
Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum have done it, and I’d expect both of them to be inducted into basketball immortality. The same goes for Anthony Edwards, Anthony Davis, and Luka Doncic.
Westbrook and Harden are right there with Durant, as the old Thunder trio all went on to win MVP’s, play for the Rockets, and score 2,000 points in multiple different seasons.
Jokic, Giannis, and SGA are all regular season and Finals MVP’s, so they’re undoubtedly going to the Hall along with the aforementioned LeBron James. Let’s not forget his career rival, Stephen Curry.
As you can see, only the best of the best are capable of scoring 2,000 points in a season. Even fewer people are able to do it multiple times throughout their career.
This is just another stat and accolade that shows the type of player Kevin Durant is, and why it’s important to not take his play for granted. Through all the ups and downs of the season, he still scored 2,026 points through 78 games. That’s consistency personified.
