KIA Autosport Athletes of the Week: Shaw Track and Field
COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) – The month of May in high school track and field is reserved for the elite, the teams still standing with a chance to compete for the state’s biggest prize. And in GHSA Class 2A, the boys and girls of Shaw High School are looking to bring hardware back to North Columbus.
The Raiders have put in the work all season, even while dealing with a major obstacle. With their regular practice facility, Kinnett Stadium, unavailable early in the season, the team had to find creative ways to prepare.
Junior Marquell Charleston said the circumstances only added motivation for the Raiders. “We knew we had a little chip on our shoulder because we are the only school in Columbus that doesn’t have a track actually connected to our school. So we didn’t actually step on to the track until January, late January. So we were doing everything we could to stay with everybody else. We were running up and down hills, running, on and off the field, doing everything we can run down hallways, doing as much as we can, just so we can stay with everybody else.”
Junior Iy’Rhianna Riley said the team’s success has come from long hours and constant dedication. “A lot a lot of hard work. Late night practices. 6:30. We don’t leave out of here. Maybe to 7:00. On top of that, just like I said, a lot of dedication. Everybody make sure that they get all the reps in, you know, just put in to work to be a region champ. You know, not trying to slack behind.”
Despite the adversity, Shaw has emerged as one of the top programs in the state. Both the boys and girls teams won the Region 1-2A Championship by more than 100 points, but the Raiders believe their journey is far from over.
Head Coach Je’Vion Fluellen said everything the team has done this season has been building toward this moment. “This, this is what we’re here for, right? We’re here for this championship drive. I tell them, like every track meet between February and March, April, mid April is just a practice meet. This is what we’re here for. We are here to win and to thrive. And to be the last one standing in this time of the year.”
