Kompany on the "tremendous gift" of guiding Bayern back to a Berlin cup final

After expressing his delight at Bayern Munich's 2-0 win over DFB-Pokal semi-finalists Bayer Leverkusen this evening, Vincent Kompany said he finds it hard to rest on ones' laurels for long.

“Since day one, everyone has been talking about Berlin. Being able to bring the club back there is a tremendous gift,” Kompany explained in his post-match interview with 2DF.

“Everything always feels a bit distant because you're focused on the next game. That's the hardest thing in football because you can't enjoy your success,” he added.

On the game itself and how it unfolded, Kompany was happy, but seemed focused on the next task at hand in the Bundesliga and a Champions League semi-final with PSG on the horizon.

"We played very well in the first half – highly intense, we didn't allow anything. Leverkusen came into the game better in the second half.

"They made us defend deeper, but we handled that well. We're still enjoying this time because it's about titles and we're in the mix everywhere. But for me, unity always comes first.

"You're always preoccupied with the next game. If we lose, it feels like a title win for the opponent – and you don't want to give that away to anyone.

“Theoretically, we'll switch [focus] to Mainz, even though we've already secured the title. We have a clear routine for how we prepare for matches. I don't want to change the process because all games are important.

“We pay very, very little attention to what comes from the outside. We don't hear all the praise. I don't want to hear any criticism either. I stay in the middle ground between the two," he added.
