Kompany âsatisfiedâ following record-breaking victory over St. Pauli
FC Bayern delivered a ruthless display at the Millerntor-Stadion on Saturday evening, cruising to a 5-0 win over St. Pauli. Goals from Jamal Musiala, Leon Goretzka, Michael Olise, Nicolas Jackson and Raphaël Guerreiro sealed a dominant performance in the Bundesliga Topspiel.
The victory was significant not just for the scoreline. Bayern also set a new Bundesliga record for goals in a single season, surpassing the previous mark of 101 and moving to 105 and counting. More crucially, they now sit just one win away from securing a 34th league title.
Speaking after the match, head coach Vincent Kompany expressed his satisfaction with both the result and the manner of the performance:
âI am satisfied with our performance and the result,â Kompany said in his post-match press conference. âSt. Pauli are a team that almost always defends very well and concedes few goals. They also have the ability for a counter-attack which, in this stadium, can be a cause for concern.
âSo what we did today here is not something that should be taken for granted.â
Musiala opened the scoring before Goretzka netted Bayernâs record-breaking 102nd goal of the campaign, and Kompany was quick to highlight the midfielderâs mentality:
âI told the team as well: if anyone believes in his moment, itâs Leon. The fact that heâs now broken this record and took it away from our strikers is somehow typical of him, because he always believes in himself. For me, heâs a great role model for the boys.â
Kompany also spoke of his pride at seeing his side etch their name into the record books:
âIâm absolutely delighted because I was just talking to Mr. HoeneĂ yesterday about how we would break this record. It stood for so long â all the more reason to celebrate that weâve finally broken it.
âWhat I generally like is that our team is known for scoring goals. Thatâs simply part of Bayern and part of our identity. I think the boys can be proud of that â but of course, the work continues.â
The Belgian coach also pointed to the strong unity within the squad as a key factor behind their success:
âI know itâs always easier when youâre winning â Iâm not naive about that. But I still think we try everything to truly be a family. Weâre doing well today, but we did this even when things werenât going so well.
âThat gives me the feeling that maybe thatâs exactly why weâre achieving what weâre currently doing. Not always with the same starting eleven, but with a whole team that is competitive and supports each other.â
Bayern now return to Munich to prepare for a crucial Champions League quarter-final second leg, with Real Madrid set to visit the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.
