Kyle Schwarber hit his 20th home run of the season, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a dramatic 11-9 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. This marks his ninth home run in eight games, putting him on pace to potentially tie the all-time record of 73 home runs.
Don Mattingly summed the Philadelphia Phillies’ victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates up perfectly in the visitors’ office after the game: that was a wild
Yes, the Phillies trailed six runs at one point and, yes, they came back to win during extra innings, 11-9. If any evidence was needed that this team has a different mindset right now than they did at the start of the season, it was this come-from-behind victory.
Another piece that made this victory so wild was that Kyle Schwarber, again, left his mark with a home run that ended up being a game-altering play, too. The designated hitter brought the Phillies within three runs with his two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning, which made it his ninth home run in the last eight games.
This long ball was also Schwarber’s 20th of the season, and it’s still just the middle of April. If the Phillies slugger continues on this pace, he’ll end up with 73 home runs once all 162 games have been played.
Theoretically, that would tie the current home run record of 73, set by Barry Bonds during the 2001 season.
Plus, after the Phillies won on Friday, Schwarber became the eighth player in MLB history to reach 20 home runs through the first 45 games of a season. The other players, or baseball legends, include Cy Williams, Mickey Mantle, Ken Griffey Jr., Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Luis Gonzelez, and Albert Pujols. (Via Bob Nightengale).

Again, that’s not just another collection of players; that’s a list of icons, and Schwarber is right there in the middle with them.
After the game, Mattingly simply praised Schwarber for how good a game planner he is, and said that's one of the key reasons he’s such a tough out.
“Schwarber is one of those guys that, you think, if you make pitches, you're get him out, and if you make mistakes, he makes you pay,” explained Philly’s skipper.
“So it's like, you feel like you can go after him a little bit if you make the right pitch. But he makes you pay when you make mistakes or leave the ball on the plate.”
Schwarber’s skillset of being one of the best power-hitters the game has ever seen is one thing, but it’s his baseball IQ and swing decisions that make him elite, and Mattingly sums that up perfectly.
Time will tell if Schwarber's game planning can help him make MLB history in 2026.
