This one was a bit of a shock. And then it wasn't.
Coming off a series win against the Chicago Cubs last time out, the Los Angeles Dodgers began the last leg of 13 straight games. They kicked off a three-game series against the Miami Marlins Monday afternoon.
Even with a spotty start from ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the offense kicked it into third gear with a walk-off winner by Kyle Tucker to earn a 5-4 series opening win.
Yamamoto was not sharp in his sixth outing of the year. The true story came from his lack of command, especially with runners in scoring position.
The right-hander gave up a season-high four free passes and an uncharacteristic three earned runs. Yamamoto dealt with traffic for most of his start, but the fourth and fifth innings proved to be too much for the World Series MVP.
The Marlins tagged Yamamoto in the fourth in what was supposed to a scot-free inning. But a bobbled ground ball with the bases loaded and two outs from Hyeseong Kim at short let Otto Lopez score.
In the fifth, Yamamoto gave up two walks, ballooning his walk total to four. He was behind yet another hitter and tried to blow a splitter by Liam Hicks, but that landed 348 feet over the right-field wall for a three-run shot.
The Dodgers offense, on the other hand, fell into old temptations.
It looked as though early on that the Dodgers would finally provide Yamamoto with much-needed run support. tacked on two runs in the first inning, but they would rewrite that in the bottom of the ninth.
The final score was 5-4 in favor of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

There were plenty of chances to score, especially in the seventh inning in a bases-loaded situation and Will Smith up to the plate.
Thus far in 2026, Smith is 1-for-3 with an RBI when he has the bases loaded. He did not tick up his batting average as he split his bat in half and grounded out to end the frame.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Dodgers again found themselves with the bases loaded and two outs. Tucker came up to bat and wasted no time to slash a single up the middle that allowed Dalton Rushing and Shohei Ohtani to score.

With the win, the Dodgers have won their third straight and have Shohei Ohtani toeing the rubber on Tuesday.
