The New England Patriots released Stefon Diggs earlier this offseason, but he remains unsigned, and Patriots fans want him back.
Diggs was found not guilty of felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery on May 5. The allegations against him likely played a role in his remaining unsigned. At this point in the offseason, he may not be able to find a lucrative deal and may have to settle for a short-term deal. He posted a highlight reel on Instagram on May 6, accompanied by a caption outlining his stats and value.
Countless Patriots fans commented on the post, telling him to return to New England. Some of his Patriots' teammates did the same. Now, Kyle Williams, who was reported to be changing his number to No. 8, worn by Diggs last season, is reportedly sticking with No. 18, per ESPN's Mike Reiss.

Fans online think Williams' sticking with No. 18 means that Diggs is coming back. It does seem odd that Williams would back out of the number change. It's possible that the finances involved with a jersey number change played a role.
Earlier this offseason, Eliot Wolf noted that he would not close the door on re-signing Diggs. He was set to have a cap hit north of $25 million next season. However, if he is willing to sign for cheaper, he could be a great addition.
"I never like to rule anything out... Don't want to close the door on anything," Wolf said in March.
If Diggs does return, he would be in a new role. The Patriots signed Romeo Doubs and are expected to acquire A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles in the coming weeks. After leading the team in receiving last season, Diggs could end up being the No. 3 receiver if he returns.
However, if the No. 3 receiver on a team is someone like Diggs, the team is probably in a great spot. Brown, Doubs and Diggs could be the best trio of receivers in the league.
