The Lakers are signing 21-year-old guard Nick Smith Jr. to a new two-year contract as they prepare for the postseason, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
He was a first-round pick from the Charlotte Hornets in the 2023 draft and signed a two-way contract with the Lakers last year.
Amid the recent injuries, Smith Jr. has already been involved with the main squad this month, delivering 11 and 12-point performances against the Oklahoma City Thunder and Golden State Warriors.
He has averaged just over 10 minutes per game in those appearances, showing flashes of scoring ability that have earned him a longer-term opportunity.
Smith Jr.’s NBA production has been limited but steady in a supporting role.
According to SofaScore, he is averaging 12.3 minutes, six points and one assist per game.
In the G League, his numbers are significantly higher, with averages of 29.3 minutes, 19.1 points and 5.5 assists per game, showing how he could develop if he earns more game time.
