As the NBA Playoffs near, the need to have a complete roster has not been more important. Often, it is those deep rotations that dictate whether or not a team is able to hoist the Larry O'Brien trophy when summer comes around. Coach JJ Redick and the Los Angeles Lakers are not afforded that same peace of mind yet. This is because both Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves have been ruled out indefinitely for the postseason.
In a year when the Lakers system seemed to be figured out, it is unfortunate that Coach JJ Redick saw both Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves go down just before the start of the NBA Playoffs. The initial plan for the postseason was to extend their run as much as possible until the two star guards come back. However, it is becoming increasingly obvious that they will not be with the Lakers roster for a while
Coach Redick's most recent statement about their injuries also doused a lot of cold water on the hopes of Lakers fans, via Dan Woike of The Athletic.
"They’re out indefinitely. I’m not going to have an update for you this week. They’re out indefinitely," the Lakers head coach declared.
Notably, Reaves suffered a Grade 2 oblique muscle strain when the Lakers faced the Oklahoma City Thunder on April 2. Experts have estimated his injury return timeline to span from four to six weeks. This means that Coach Redick and the Lakers will not see him in action until the second round of the NBA Playoffs.
Doncic, on the other hand, is suffering a Grade 2 hamstring sprain. The Lakers sent him to Europe in order to expedite his injury recovery process. Typically, this injury means that he will not be able to play for about three to six weeks. More than that, his injury is more sensitive because patients often limp when facing the sprain's pain.
Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves have both been ruled out indefinitely due to injuries, although specific details about their conditions have not been disclosed.
The absence of Doncic and Reaves significantly weakens the Lakers' roster depth, which is crucial for their performance in the playoffs.
Coach JJ Redick expressed concern over the indefinite absence of both players, which has dampened the hopes of Lakers fans for a successful playoff run.
