It was always unlikely that LeBron James was going to make a definitive retirement announcement after the Los Angeles Lakers' season ended.
And he didn't, although he spoke somewhat openly about the idea during his postgame press conference late Monday night into Tuesday. The Lakers had just been swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder, and James knew his future would be a hot-button topic.
LeBron is 41 now and has accomplished all there is to accomplish in the NBA.
He's the league's all-time leading scorer. He's even played on the court at the same time as his son.
At this point, James continuing to play basketball will only be about his desire to keep on hooping.
Maybe the most entertaining part of his postgame comments is that he's essentially said some of them before.
"I don’t know what the future holds for me," James said. "... I’ll go back and recalibrate with my family and talk with them, spend some time with them, and when the time comes, you guys will know what I decide to do.”

That last line, "You guys will know what I decide to do," has been said by James almost verbatim earlier this season.
It's not the kind of sentiment that's always expressed in these moments, which makes it interesting.
James could mean it a couple different ways. It could be a tongue-in-cheek idea that basically there'll be a reporter who is all over the news through sourcing as soon as a decision is made. But it could also be James trying to be respectful and say hey, the media isn't going to be kept in the dark once this choice has been made.
Clearly, it'll be a massive story either way.
If James retires, that's one of the best players ever finally stepping away after incredible longevity.
If he comes back, he's a free agent and will have all sorts of speculation surrounding him about where he'll play next season.
No matter what, this will be one of the most compelling storylines of the NBA offseason.
