Los Angeles is in the middle of campaign season for the mayoral election that will take place on Nov. 3. Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson made it clear which candidate will have his vote during the election.
Johnson made a public statement endorsing current LA mayor, Karen Bass, for re-election. Bass became the first women and second African American to serve as LA’s mayor when she was sworn in on Dec. 12, 2022.
Johnson said he has been friends with Bass for more than 30 years. He also praised her for her actions on homelessness and lowering the homicide rates in Los Angeles.
“She’s doing a tremendous job. Mayor Bass has to have a second term and I’m excited to say that,” Johnson said. “Listen, you took on a tough job here and you’ve done a fabulous job and all of us appreciate your effort and what you’re doing and we look forward to helping you continue your mission and the things that you have in store – your vision for the city.”

One of the key arguments that has been made against Bass’ re-election is how she handled the 2025 wildfires.
While Johnson is endorsing Bass for re-election, Lakers governor Jeanie Buss is supporting Republican candidate, Spencer Pratt.
Buss made a maximum, $1,800 donation to Pratt’s 2026 mayoral campaign. Pratt was also spotted sitting next to Buss at the Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals between the Lakers and Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday.
But unlike Johnson, Buss has not made a public statement endorsing Pratt during the election.
