Spring practice was always going to be a challenging period for LSU football. Although Lane Kiffin’s offensive staff is largely brought from his former post at Ole Miss, they all have had to adjust to life in a brand-new state and a brand-new program, not to mention that they’re working with an offense that is mostly unfamiliar with one another.
To make things tougher, the Tigers’ projected starting quarterback, Sam Leavitt, hasn’t been able to practice this spring due to recovery from a surgery he underwent last fall. This has left team periods in the hands of Elon transfer Landen Clark and USC transfer Husan Longstreet, both of whom lack Power Four starting experience.
These factors set the stage for a rough start to spring practice, but according to Kiffin, things have rapidly improved over the past week.
“There’s still a ton of work to be done there. I’m very pleased in the last week of the progression of the offense, just everybody feeling each other out,” Kiffin explained during Tuesday’s press conference. “It was very concerning, early on, offensively. So it’s been really good, and we’re headed in the right direction, but there’s still a ton of work to do.”
