Latest: Chelsea choose “preferred candidate” for manager role after holding talks with impressive coach

Chelsea are closing in on Xabi Alonso as their next manager, if you believe what some of the sources are saying.

Italian transfer insider Nicolo Schira has today updated his report on the Blues’ interest in Alonso, which has grown more solid in recent days as some of the big names in transfer journalism have got behind the idea that we’re really keen on him, and that he would consider coming to us.

Chelsea inching closer to Alonso

Sadly we’re now into the phase we get with all big moves, whether that’s for players or coaches, where all the insiders are just repeating their previous information with incremental changes to try and juice up their engagement even on days when there’s not been a material change in the story.

Certainly Schira’s claim that Alonso is the “preferred candidate” is a little bit stronger than what he had before, as is the statement that we’ve “held talks.”

But for now it’s going to be a slow and painful wait for the next proper step forward.
