The former right-back won five major trophies in seven seasons under Arsene Wenger. The Cameroon international was an integral member of the 2004 Invincibles and key to the Arsenal side that reached the 2006 UCL final.
He admits the return to the latter stages of the competition brings back strong memories, even if he was suspended for the showpiece itself.
âYes, it gives me good memories, especially the one that we won against Villarreal in the semi-final. It was fantastic,â he said.
âUnfortunately I couldnât play the final, but the team did very well to reach it. For the game tonight, we have to control the emotional factor.â
The sides are tied at one-all after the first leg in Spain and Lauren believes that composure will be decisive against an experienced Atlético side.
âIf you control the emotional factor, then you will be able to express yourself,â he said. âThe team will understand the tactic and play with freedom.â
He points to Arsenalâs attacking options as a key reason for confidence, particularly with several players peaking at the right time.
âI always say that if the players in the last third reach this moment of the competition at their highest level, we have a big chance,â he said.
âI see that Viktor Gyökeres is scoring goals, is back and scoring goals, and you have and too.

âEberechi Eze has been an absolutely fantastic signing and heâs been playing very well. When he came into the team against AtlĂ©tico Madrid, he did very well.
âI believe those players have arrived at the best moment possible. We have a big chance to win tonight and achieve our goal by the end of the season.â
Having played in Spain, where he now lives and works as a respected pundit as well as being a FIFA technical expert, Lauren expects a demanding tactical test.
âAtlĂ©tico Madrid is going to be a very tough game. They are dangerous away from home because they play on the counter attack and can sit in a low block if necessary,â he said.
âIt is very important to control the emotional factor but also, when we win the ball high up, the first pass has to be direct, looking for the player attacking the space.
âThey will close the space and it will be difficult, so when we win the ball high we have to move it quickly to create chances.â
Lauren, speaking with Hayters TV via Gambling.com where you can explore top UK online casinos also highlighted a potential weakness.
âThey are a very good team but they have been conceding a lot of goals,â he said. âIn the last seven games they have conceded 12, many from set pieces.
âIf we do what we normally do in an intelligent way, we have a big chance to win the game.â
Victory would move Arsenal closer to a first European Cup, something Lauren believes would carry huge significance.
âIt means a lot,â he said. âWe have been waiting for such a long time. I believe the team is in the right moment to win tonight and then play the final.â
Respect for Mikel Artetaâs side extends beyond England, he added.
âIn Spain there is big respect,â he said. âPeople talk very well about Arsenal and about Arteta because this season Arsenal have been the best team.
âThe pathway has been brilliant.â
That belief extends to the domestic title race, even after Manchester City dropped points.
âI know that we are going to win this league,â Lauren said.
âItâs not because of yesterday. I said it one month ago. The pathway has been brilliant. The boys have to believe.â
With a Champions League semi-final to be decided and the Premier League title within reach, Lauren sees no reason why Arsenal cannot complete a defining season.
