LeBron James is a national champion. The other LeBron James. The one who throws a javelin really, really far.
OK, wait, that doesn't necessarily narrow it down.
This James is a sophomore at New Mexico Junior College. On Thursday at the NJCAA National Championships, the Trinidad and Tobago native set a new record, winging his third throw 255 feet and seven inches -- more than 24 feet further than the second place finisher who doesn't share a name with one of the most famous athletes of all time. That means we aren't even close to done hearing about the other, incredibly un-Googleable James.
A heave of 255-7 would have finished third in each of the last three NCAA Division I track and field championships. Elite track programs like Arkansas, USC, Texas A&M, Florida or LSU could all use a ready-made thrower who can immediately score points at a national meet. Here's a guy who not only has two years of eligibility left, but also an incredibly marketable name that's going to make people like me stop and take notice even if he isn't, you know, LeBron James.
Delightfully enough, his favorite athlete is... LeBron James. But not that one. LeBron James Jr., better known as "Bronny" and career 2.7 point per game scorer for the Los Angeles Lakers.
James, assuming he's 20 years old after two seasons at NMJC, would have been born sometime around the legend's third season in the league, en route to his debut on the All-NBA first-team (one of 13 times). This seems like a solid enough achievement to be the namesake for a child on an island about 2,500 miles away.
We look forward to two years of double takes each spring when James takes the podium at the NCAA championships. And then, should he continue to soar, some Bronny jokes every four years at the Summer Olympics.
