The Boston Red Sox fired Alex Cora on Saturday, and former Red Sox manager Terry Francona spoke on the move on "The Show With Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman."
Francona won two World Series as the Red Sox manager and has the second-most wins as a manager in franchise history. Cora was creeping up on his wins total, sitting at No. 3 on the list. Had he finished out his contract, he would likely have passed Francona. Cora's firing shocked the baseball world, and Francona was no exception. He spoke about his relationship with Cora on Tuesday.
"You never want to see somebody lose their job," Francona said on “The Show with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman." "It doesn’t feel good ever. And so most of these guys are pretty good friends of mine. Like, Cora’s one of my favorite people in the world. It does happen, unfortunately, and it’s part of the job, and you kind of know that going in.”
Francona is currently managing the Cincinnati Reds. He led them to the postseason in his first season last year, and stressed the fact that even the most experienced managers can lose their jobs and have to start over.
Francona has been managing since 1997 and has won both of his World Series with the Red Sox. Cora also won a World Series in Boston, but now he will have to continue his managerial career elsewhere.
The specific reasons for Alex Cora's firing have not been detailed, but it has shocked many in the baseball community.
