Lewis Steele claims Anfield's fear factor has vanished under Arne Slot, as Chelsea appeared strong during their draw. He argues that Slot has made mediocre teams look competent this season.
Lewis Steele: Anfieldâs fear factor is âcompletely goneâ under Arne Slot
On Media Matters for Anfield Index, Dave Davis and Lewis Steele picked apart another troubling Liverpool display, this time after Chelseaâs draw at Anfield. Steeleâs verdict was blunt: âChelsea are a bad teamâ who âcame to Anfield and looked like a good team.â
That, for Steele, has become the pattern under Arne Slot. âHeâs made pretty average teams look good,â he said, adding that âSlot is making bad teams look pretty all right and that is the biggest legacy of this season for me.â
Davis noted how Liverpool started well, went ahead, then appeared to stop playing. Steele agreed, saying: âThey play well for 15 minutes,â before they âseem to just forget that theyâre good.â
His most damning line was simple: Liverpool âretreat back on the pitch and they invite pressure.â Against Chelsea, he felt âyou could see that Chelsea goal was coming for 10 minutes before it did go in.â
That speaks to a wider anxiety around Arne Slotâs Liverpool. Steele argued that when Liverpool struggle, Slot âdidnât know how to fix it,â calling that âa microcosm of the whole season.â
The strongest section of the podcast came when Davis asked whether Anfield had lost its aura. Steele did not hesitate. âThe fortress is completely gone,â he said.
He compared this Liverpool side with previous years, when even struggling teams would not relish a trip to Anfield. âIn Liverpoolâs worst moments over the last 10 years, Anfield has still been a fixture that I think all teams and all fans would say I donât fancy our chances there.â
Now, Steele said, that has changed. âIf I supported any team in the Premier League I would now look at Anfield and go, oh we could win there.â
That is not merely about results. It is about mood, belief and authority. Steele said the fans âhave seen enoughâ and added: âI donât blame them for leaving.â

Davis referenced the boos at full time, and Steele said Liverpoolâs decision makers âcanât not hear the negativity towards Arne Slot.â He added: âEvery Liverpool fan I speak to apart from a very small number donât think that heâs the man to turn it round.â
Steele also questioned Liverpoolâs effort levels, saying: âIâve not seen any fight from them in the last six months.â On Slotâs football, he was just as severe: âThe football style has just been so bad. Itâs so slow.â
Lewis Steele believes the fear factor at Anfield is gone because teams like Chelsea, which he considers average, have performed well against Liverpool.
Arne Slot has been criticized for making bad teams look competent, which has contributed to a decline in Liverpool's home advantage.
Lewis Steele described Chelsea as a bad team that managed to look good during their draw at Anfield, highlighting Liverpool's struggles.
