Lewis Steele pours cold water on Liverpoolâs reported move for defender
Liverpoolâs summer rebuild was a major theme on the latest Media Matters podcast from Anfield Index, where Dave Davis and Lewis Steele discussed the Redsâ reported interest in Marcos Senesi.
With uncertainty surrounding several defensive positions, the suggestion of a free transfer move for the AFC Bournemouth centre back has quickly attracted attention.
During the conversation, Davis noted reports claiming Liverpool were leading other clubs in the race for Senesi. Steele acknowledged how strongly the story had been circulating, saying, âSenesi one seems to be pushed quite a lot and his name seems to be going around quite, maybe a bit too much.â
That cautious response suggested Liverpool interest may not be as advanced as some reports imply. Rather than confirming a clear move, Steele framed the situation as one to treat carefully.
Still, the logic behind the link is obvious. Liverpool may need defensive depth, especially with doubts over the futures of several senior players.
One factor making Senesi an attractive name is the reported availability on a free transfer. Steele highlighted how that could influence Liverpoolâs thinking.
âI think heâs available on a free,â he said, before outlining the potential appeal. âLiverpool do look at it and think, you know what, letâs just get him in on a free.â
For a club balancing multiple priorities in one transfer window, a no fee signing could allow resources to be used elsewhere. Liverpool are also expected to pursue additions in midfield, attack and at full back, making cost effective deals valuable.
Lewis Steele poured cold water on the rumors, indicating skepticism about the reported move for the defender.

Despite the financial appeal, Steele also pointed to one obvious complication, Senesiâs age. âHeâs twenty eight, which is not the age that Liverpool normally buy.â
That remark is significant because Liverpool have often targeted younger players with resale value and long term upside. Signing a player approaching 30 would represent a different type of move, one focused more on immediate squad depth and experience.
Whether that signals a shift in strategy or simply opportunism remains to be seen.
Steele also referenced Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughesâ knowledge of Bournemouth, noting, âRichard Hughes obviously knows Bournemouth well.â
That existing relationship naturally adds intrigue to any Bournemouth related transfer links, particularly after Hughesâ move to Anfield.
However, Steele ultimately suggested much depends on other defensive decisions, especially contract talks and possible exits. If Liverpool retain key centre backs, the need for Senesi may lessen. If changes occur, the link could gather pace.
For now, the Marcos Senesi story appears to be one of opportunity rather than certainty, a sensible option being discussed as Liverpool prepare for a busy summer.
