Lewis Steele rates Liverpoolâs chances of signing Ligue 1 midfielder
On Media Matters for Anfield Index, Dave Davis and Lewis Steele discussed Liverpoolâs ongoing midfield plans, with reported interest in Lens midfielder Mamadou Sangare and AS Monacoâs Lamine Camara becoming part of the conversation.
Steele explained that Liverpool are âscouring the market for a midfielderâ as Arne Slot prepares for another major rebuild at Anfield.
The discussion came amid growing uncertainty around Liverpoolâs midfield depth and possible departures this summer, particularly with Curtis Jones heavily linked with an exit.
Davis referenced reports linking Liverpool with Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara alongside Mamadou Sangare and other emerging targets.
When asked how likely Liverpool are to sign a midfielder of that profile, Steele replied: âFor the Ligue 1 midfielders, I would say maybe a 6.5.â
He added: âTheyâre definitely going to sign a midfielder.â
That certainty reflects Liverpoolâs wider squad concerns after a difficult season under Slot, where Steele repeatedly questioned the teamâs intensity, control and physical level compared to previous years at Anfield.
One of the more revealing parts of the discussion centred on whether Liverpool will pursue younger developmental players like Sangare and Camara or move for more proven Premier League options.
Liverpool is actively tracking Mamadou Sangare as part of their midfield plans, but specific chances of signing him are not detailed.
Lamine Camara is a midfielder from AS Monaco, and Liverpool's interest stems from their need to bolster their midfield options.
Liverpool is preparing for a significant rebuild under Arne Slot, focusing on strengthening their midfield ahead of the summer transfer window.

Steele pointed towards Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton as another name under consideration, while suggesting Liverpoolâs transfer strategy may be evolving.
âI think five years ago they would have gone with the Ligue 1 option just knowing how FSG work,â he explained.
However, Steele also noted that the last two transfer windows under Richard Hughes have looked âslightly different,â adding: âMaybe his style is a bit different in the more moneyball approach.â
That could influence whether Liverpool prioritise younger talents such as Sangare and Camara or decide experience is needed after such an unstable campaign.

Steele also raised doubts over whether one midfield addition will be enough.
âI look at the team now with the midfield options they have and I think they need an extra number,â he said. âSo that means if one leaves then you need two to replace him.â
Financially, though, Liverpool may face difficult choices with a winger, defender and potentially a goalkeeper also on the summer agenda.
âThereâs a lot of work to be done,â Steele admitted.
For Liverpool, the interest in Mamadou Sangare and Lamine Camara underlines the scale of the rebuild facing Arne Slot this summer. With changes expected across the squad, midfield recruitment looks certain to become one of the defining priorities at Anfield.
