Lewis Steele discusses the potential arrival of Reijnen and suggests that a new perspective could benefit Liverpool. The current atmosphere around the team is marked by doubt and dissatisfaction following recent defeats.
Lewis Steele: Reijnen likely comes and a fresh voice might help Liverpool
On Media Matters for Anfield Index, Dave Davis and Lewis Steele picked through a Liverpool picture that sounded heavy with doubt. Davis framed the mood by saying, âThey kind of linger, these defeats, donât they?â and added that âthereâs just not too much happiness to be found right now.â
Steeleâs answer to the wider Slot debate was blunt. When discussing criticism of the manager and the tactical direction, he said one argument from a supporter âbasically just completely undermines the role of the manager and the tacticsâ. His point was clear, the coach matters because, as he put it, managers âare the most important people at the football clubâ.
On Slot, Steele did not soften the concern. âIf people want to defend Slot, then thatâs completely fine,â he said, before adding that âsome of the rationale behind it is just a bit, all over the place.â Davis then raised the line that there was âzero evidenceâ to believe next season would improve, and Steele agreed with the substance of that concern.

The most intriguing Assistant thread came when Davis raised Etienne Reijnen. âThe name Etienne Reijnen wonât go away if Iâm pronouncing it right,â Davis said, before noting that Slot âdidnât shut it downâ and had said âone had left in our coaching team, so one might have to come in.â
Steele replied: âYeah, it sounds like Etienne Reijnen, or whatever his name is, is going to be coming to Liverpool, or at least heâs going to be allowed to make the decision to come to Liverpool.â He added: âWe know that he wasnât able to back in 2024.â
There was caution too. âI donât know much about him other than the conversations I have had about him,â Steele admitted. âPeople say heâs very good, but then I could get anyone to say that anyoneâs very good.â
Steele linked the Reijnen and Assistant discussion to a wider need for movement inside the building. âI wouldnât be surprised if Van Bronckhorst does end up at Feyenoord,â he said, before asking whether that âstill leaves a hole in Liverpoolâs coaching set-up, because Briggs left.â
His verdict was pointed: âEveryone in the building could benefit with a couple of new faces.â The reason, in Steeleâs words, was that âtheyâre not learning from mistakesâ and âeverythingâs gone a bit stale this season.â He added: âI think a coaching shake-up can help a team more than maybe people think.â
By the end, Steele returned to uncertainty. âThereâs loads of questions to answer,â he told Davis. âWe think that Slotâs going to be the manager, but we donât really know. No oneâs ever said that for definite.â
For Liverpool, the Reijnen question now sits within a broader Slot conversation. If an Assistant arrives, Steeleâs view was simple enough: âThat can only be a good thing, surely.â
Reijnen is expected to join Liverpool, and his fresh perspective might help improve the team's current morale and performance.
