Following rookie minicamp this past weekend, the Jacksonville Jaguars' 10 draft picks and 18 undrafted free agent additions will now join the veterans for Phase II of offseason programs.
Prior to the rookies' arrival, head coach Liam Coen had a brief but important message for the Jaguars' veteran players.
"We were all starting off so fresh at that time," Coen said of last year's team as a new head coach. "And you look at that was exactly what I mentioned to the vets on Thursday with them was, man, when these guys get in here on Monday and get integrated with you all, I need you all to to set the standards and show these guys what our standards are of how to operate in the meeting room settings and walkthroughs and practice.
"Show these guys what our standards are of how to operate in the meeting room settings and walkthroughs and practice. They're competing with each other for spots, but man, we need every single guy."
For these incoming rookies, everything is new. It's not only a new playbook that has to be learned, but also how to go about practice and operate on a day-to-day basis in the NFL are a part of the rookie learning curve as well. The coaches will be active in helping these first-year players get acclimated, but the more touchpoints from veteran teammates along the way, the better.
Coen's overarching message to his team this offseason has been to continue to feel a sense of urgency, so that last year's results become the norm for the Jaguars and not an outlier. The veterans taking a proactive role in helping the rookies along fits into that high urgency bucket.
This offseason for Coen and the Jaguars is quite a bit different than a year ago. Rather than implementing new schemes, the Jaguars can build off what was established in 2025. That continuity can be the catalyst behind a jump in Year 2 under Coen and Anthony Campanile on the defensive side of the ball.
