After several dark (and painful) months, Lindsey Vonn is finally feeling hopeful about the future â and even making some vacation plans.
"It's definitely been a tough two months, but I feel like I've kind of hit some nice milestones recently, and am getting closer to being back to the real world and getting my life back," Vonn, 41, tells PEOPLE, of recovering after shattering her left leg during the 2026 Winter Olympics.
The Olympic gold medalist, who is working on an educational initiative with Invivyd on their Antibodies for Any Body campaign to promote antibody research, says it's now time to take a little break from the endless surgeries and PT, and get to the ocean.

"I'm the kind of person who plans for success, so I am planning on a full recovery," she says. "I'm also planning on doing fun things this summer. I'm going on vacation. I'd better be going on vacation! The plane ticket is booked, anyway. I need a good summer, and to disconnect from everything that happened. Plus, in the next six weeks I'll be able to live much more normally, and go places and do things."

Still, don't expect someone as active as Vonn to just lie on the pool lounger reading all day.
"I'm going to be doing some scuba diving," she says with a laugh. "And my friend wants to teach me kite surfing. I'm an adventure junkie! It's not like skiing is the only thing I do."

Vonn notes that she'll have to keep up with her PT exercises wherever she goes, gearing up for her sixth and hopefully final surgery this fall. In the meantime, she's doing everything she can to keep her body healing.
"Health has always been something that's been incredibly important to me, not just through this injury," Vonn says.
"And obviously, as an athlete, you need to perform, and being sick is something that I have always tried to avoid. So being a part of the Antibodies for Any Body campaign makes sense, since it's geared towards helping people understand what antibodies do for you, how they protect against germs and toxins."
As for one day getting back to skiing at 85 MPH again? Vonn says you can count on it.
"Whether it's on the race course or not, I'll definitely be going back to it," she says with a laugh, agreeing that yes, she knows she has a need for speed. "Maybe I'll also find a fast car and a race track somewhere." The one thing she won't do? Skydiving.
"I've done bungee jumping, but I'm saving skydiving for an emergency-only type of thing," she says.
