Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi has confirmed the purchase of Catalan club UE Cornella.
The Spanish club, which currently plays in the Tercera Federación (the fifth tier of Spanish football) also confirmed the purchase on their official website.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has outlined his intention to build something meaningful in a region that shaped much of his legendary career.
UE Cornella is based in Catalonia, where the 38-year-old Miami star spent 17 years of his football career playing for Barcelona.
Messi is understood to have bought a 100% stake in Cornella, meaning he will own the club outright.
In an official statement, the Spanish club described his arrival as a move that “reinforces Messi’s close ties to Barcelona and his commitment to the development of sport and local talent in Catalonia”.
Despite playing in the fifth tier, Cornella is one of the most respected clubs in Spanish football’s lower divisions and is renowned for developing talent.
Over the years, several notable players have passed through the club’s ranks, including Spain international goalkeeper David Raya and Messi’s former teammate Jordi Alba.
