Jameson Williams, a wide receiver for the Detroit Lions, is suing the NCAA, Big Ten, and SEC over alleged improper use of his name, image, and likeness (NIL). He claims they denied him NIL earnings while profiting from his likeness without fair compensation.

Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams has filed a lawsuit against the NCAA, Big Ten and SEC for what he alleges is improper use of his name, image and likeness.
The lawsuit, filed this week in Los Angeles County and first reported on by The California Post, also alleges that the NCAA and the conferences denied Williams from earning NIL money while continuing to use his NIL for their own benefit.
"Williams has received no fair compensation from Defendants for the full commercial value of his name, image, and likeness. [Defendants] continuously financially benefit from Jameson Williams’ name, image and likeness rights, [while] also doing so without proving him with just compensation," the lawsuit reads.

Williams played at Ohio State from 2019-20, recording 15 catches in 19 games over his two seasons. He broke out with Alabama in 2021, leading the SEC with 1,572 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns before tearing his ACL in the national title game against Georgia.
The Lions traded up and selected him with the No. 12 overall pick in 2022.
He had his best season in the NFL in 2025, hauling in 65 catches for 1,117 yards and seven receiving touchdowns (all career highs).

The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles County.
He claims he has received no fair compensation for the commercial value of his name, image, and likeness while the defendants continue to financially benefit from it.

Williams is looking for back payment from the conferences using his NIL on social media posts and game telecasts, claiming he deserves compensation for the conference's "unlawful conduct." Williams alleges the conferences are in violation of several acts, including the Sherman Antitrust Act and the Cartwright Act, a California antitrust law.
