LIV Golf cancelled press conferences yesterday over ‘technical issues’ amid rumours of big announcement to come

The rumour mill kicked into overdrive this week following surprise claims over the future of LIV Golf, with suggestions made on social media that the league may not be around much longer.

LIV Golf endured a pretty miserable Masters, with Tyrrell Hatton proving to be the only player who managed to finish inside the top 30 at Augusta National.

So it may have suited some of their players to get back in action so quickly, with the league’s next event taking place in Mexico City this week.

However, perhaps there is a chance that the event may not take place at all.

Doubts over the future of LIV Golf have emerged

Ryan French of the X account Monday Q Info claimed on Tuesday that LIV is shutting down.

Of course, many have been waiting for any official news from the league itself.

What did not help prevent the speculation kicking into top gear was the fact that no one spoke to the media in Mexico City ahead of their next event.

According to Chris McKee, the league cancelled all press conferences due to technical issues on Tuesday. He later reported that everything had been pushed back until Wednesday.

LIV Golf seems to be in trouble regardless of what the immediate future holds

The idea that LIV Golf could go anywhere seems truly remarkable. Clearly, the league had seen its momentum stall in the last couple of years.

They have not managed to make a marquee signing since Jon Rahm jumped from the PGA Tour in 2023. Meanwhile, no LIV player has won a major since 2024.

They have also seen both Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed leave in recent months. Both players departed despite not being able to make an immediate return to the PGA Tour’s biggest events.

Despite all that, it appeared that the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia were prepared to take their time in their push to get a seat at the table.

The claim seems so outlandish that it is hard not to feel as though there has to be something to it. French will be aware of how it will look if LIV does not shut down any time soon.

Whatever happens next, it is arguably a sign of the lack of progress LIV has made that such a rumour can emerge and pick up so much traction.
