Liverpool is close to finalizing a new contract with Ibrahima Konate, potentially worth over £50 million. The agreement is expected to be completed soon.
Liverpool on brink of incredible agreement worth over £50m
Liverpool are nearing what could be their biggest agreement of the summer. Easily worth £50m.
Liverpool are close to agreeing a new contract with Ibrahima Konate. We know this because the Frenchman has actually come out and said it himself - this one should be done relatively soon.
And that's a massive bonus for Liverpool. In fact, it's an incredible agreement and one worth an awful lot of money.
It's easy to look at this as a 'freebie', given Konate is already at the club but it really, really isn't. Losing him would force Liverpool into the transfer market not just for a new centre-back, but for a senior option who can step right in at the top level.
Such a player costs a lot of money. Nico Schlotterbeck, for instance, has been touted at £50m and that's the going rate for a top-level centre-back in and around the prime of their career.
And so getting Konate to renew his contract is like grabbing a £50m centre-back without a transfer fee. It's an incredible piece of business and exactly what needed to happen for the summer to go as smoothly as possible.
So full credit to everyone at Liverpool for this one. We didn't think it would happen, given how late in the day things have gotten. But re-signing Konate is a coup and a magnificent piece of business.
Contract Breakthrough and Future at Anfield
As of 21 April 2026, Ibrahima Konaté has provided a major boost to Liverpool by confirming he is "close to an agreement" on a new long-term contract. The 26-year-old’s current deal was set to expire in June 2026, leading to intense speculation regarding a free transfer to or . However, following the 2–1 Merseyside derby victory over on 19 April, Konaté revealed that there is a "big chance" he remains on Merseyside, citing his special bond with the club and staff. This renewal is seen as a vital piece of business for Sporting Director Richard Hughes, ensuring defensive continuity as fellow seniors and also navigate final-year negotiations.
The agreement is reportedly worth over £50 million.
The contract is expected to be completed relatively soon.
This agreement could be Liverpool's biggest of the summer, providing a massive boost to their squad.

Performance and Personal Resilience
Konaté has been a pillar of resilience during a challenging 2025–2026 campaign for the Reds. He has made 31 Premier League appearances, recording 10 clean sheets and a 92% pass completion rate. His season was marked by personal tragedy following the death of his father in January, yet he cut his compassionate leave short to help the team through a defensive injury crisis, even scoring in his return against Newcastle. While Konaté admitted the season has fallen below Liverpool’s standards—following their Champions League exit to PSG—he remains central to Arne Slot’s plans for a defensive unit that currently includes Virgil van Dijk, Giovanni Leoni, and Jeremy Jacquet.
