Ibrahima Konate should be Liverpool’s vice-captain

Two massive departures, Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson, have already been announced ahead of the summer window opening.

Robertson is the current vice-captain at Anfield, and Salah is probably the player who would have been next in line to that title.

The two departures have led to plenty of speculation over who could be Liverpool’s next vice-captain, and a couple of players are leading the way.

Dominik Szoboszlai, who captains his international side Hungary, has been one of the club’s best players this season and many view him as the heir to the vice-captaincy.

The news of Konate’s pending extension will complicate matters though, and the Frenchman could be the ideal candidate to replace Robertson.

By the time the summer is over, Konate could well be the fifth longest serving player in the Liverpool squad, with Salah, Robertson, Alisson Becker, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott all already confirmed to be leaving the club or rumoured to be departing.

The defender is a key part of the team, and has become increasingly important since Slot took charge.

A new deal for the 26-year-old shows exactly how important the hierarchy at the club view him to be, and that could make him the front-runner for the vice-captaincy.

Speaking after Sunday’s victory over Everton, Konate said, via The Times: “For sure there is a big chance I’m here next season. This is what I always wanted.

“I’m waiting to sort the contract, but when everything is sorted you will have to ask Richard [Hughes] what I said to him in September, November and he’s going to say something to make everyone quiet.”
