Logan Gilbert Discusses Scary Play in Game Between Seattle Mariners, Athletics
SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners salvaged the final game of a six-game homestand with a 5-4 win against the Athletics on Wednesday at T-Mobile Park.
With the win, the Mariners finished their six-game homestand 3-3 and finished with a 7-6 record in their streak of 13 consecutive games without a day off.
However, the game didn't come without its share of drama.
For one, the game came down to the final inning — which ended via a walk-off RBI single from first baseman Josh Naylor.
Seattle starting pitcher Logan Gilbert went four innings in his outing against the A's.
Impressively, Gilbert finished his outing despite a scary moment in the top of the first inning.
Athletics right fielder Carlos Cortes hit a 107.8-mph comebacker at Gilbert. The ball went into Gilbert's jersey, which resulted in brief confusion from the players, umpires and fans.
"I thought it was in (Gilbert's) glove and he didn't know he caught it," Naylor said in a postgame interview Wednesday. "And he was looking around trying to find the ball. It was hit so hard that I think he thought it may have hit his glove and bobbled somewhere else and (he) couldn't find it."
Due to the rule that a catch can only be made with a hand or a glove and not any other kind of equipment, the play was ruled a base hit. Gilbert briefly leaned over after the play and was checked on by manager Dan Wilson and trainers.
Gilbert opted to stay in and finished out his outing, but it wasn't without some marks to show for it.
Per comments he made after the game, Gilbert is now sporting a bruise in his stomach. He was also sporting a bandage on his left wrist. He was bleeding from the same area his bandage was applied during the game. And he doesn't know how he got the latter of the bumps.
Logan Gilbert discussed the frightening moment during the game, emphasizing its impact on the players.

"At first it happened so quick I wasn't sure what happened," Gilbert said in a postgame interview Wednesday. "And then it hurt after that a little bit. So I had to take a second. ... I'm bleeding (on my left wrist). I don't know how that happened. Maybe the ball hit there. It happened pretty quick so I don't know why."
Despite the extra bumps and bruises, it seems like Gilbert is alright. That bodes well for the Mariners, who are embarking on a six-game road trip comprised of two three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals and Minnesota Twins.
Gilbert's next turn on the mound is set to be in game two against the Twins based on the current rotation schedule.
