Johnstone, who had been playing right field and was 0-for-3 in the game, was pinch-hit for by Chris Maldonado. He previously missed five games with a concussion, including the entire Texas series, but had returned for a midweek game against Middle Tennessee ahead of the series against No. 23 Alabama (31-16, 12-11 SEC). Will Hampton ultimately replaced Johnstone in right field, while Maldonado came in to play first base for Tommy Goodin in a double-switch.
Vanderbilt (27-21, 10-13) trailed, 7-5, in the top of the eighth inning at the time of the injury. Maldonado ultimately struck out swinging in place of Johnstone.
