As the Philadelphia 76ers and the Boston Celtics prepare to do battle in Round 1 of the NBA Playoffs beginning on Sunday afternoon, it's time to look back at what happened between these teams in the regular season. Due to them playing in the same division, they played each other four teams and three of those games came down to the final possession.
The Sixers and Celtics split the four games between the teams in the regular season with three of those contests coming in the first 11 games for Philadelphia. The Sixers were able to see rookie VJ Edgecombe blossom on opening night at the TD Garden and they were also able to see Tyrese Maxey have some big games against this Celtics defense at times.
With that being said, here is a look back at the four regular season matchups between these teams:
On this night, Edgecombe let the NBA world know that he is here. In his NBA debut, Edgecombe dropped 34 points on 13-for-26 shooting while Maxey dropped 40 points to lead Philadelphia to a comeback win. The Sixers also received huge play from Kelly Oubre Jr. as he knocked down a clutch 3-pointer late with the game in the balance and he battled defensively against Boston star Jaylen Brown. A lot of credit has to go to Oubre for his play in this game.
A poor first quarter did the Sixers in this game. The Celtics got off to a hot start and led by 13 after the first quarter, but Philadelphia battled back to make it a game before Boston was able to hold them off and secure the win. The loss was Philadelphia's first of the season after a 4-0 start. had 20 points, but was limited to 25 minutes due to his restrictions in his return back from offseason knee surgery. Maxey had 26 points on this night.
The Sixers and Celtics each won two games in their four regular season matchups.

The Sixers received a huge lift from Justin Edwards on this night. With Philadelphia missing both Embiid and Paul George for this contest, Edwards poured in 22 points off the bench and knocked down five 3s on six attempts. Andre Drummond played a big role with 14 points and 13 rebounds--he will play a big role in this playoff series as well. Philadelphia almost let this one slip away with a poor third quarter, but recovered nicely to steal a win.
The Sixers got hit with a Celtics avalanche in the second quarter and couldn't recover. While Maxey had 33 points and Edgecombe had 23, the Sixers didn't get much from the rest of the roster as Boston overwhelmed them, led by big man Neemias Queta with a career-high 27 points and 17 rebounds. Brown added 27 and Derrick White had 21 for the Celtics.
